Water Drops

Level Description

Our swim program builds skills step-by-step: Beginner for basic water comfort, Intermediate for glide development, Advanced for independent swimming, Stroke for body positioning and stroke introduction and Gold for competitive refinement and Stroke Mastery. Each level emphasizes safety and progress.

Beginner

Prerequisites: None
Description: This entry-level class is perfect for children aged 3 and up with no prior swimming experience. The focus is on building comfort and trust in the water through engaging, interactive activities. Key skills include deck entries, floating independently on the front and back, and gliding through the water up to three body lengths. Instructors use playful teaching methods to encourage exploration in a safe and supportive environment. Graduates of this stage are confident in self-submerging, floating on their back, and gliding independently.

Intermediate

Prerequisites: Ability to glide, perform sit jumps, and float on the back for 8 seconds.
Description: The Intermediate class builds on foundational skills by introducing breath control and propulsion techniques to prepare students for independent swimming. Students learn to kick powerfully on their stomach and back while maintaining a streamlined body position. Additional activities include underwater swimming and diving for rings to enhance confidence and control. By the end of this stage, students can swim short distances independently and demonstrate improved water movement skills.

Advanced

Prerequisites: Independent swimming on the stomach with rollover breathing, back kicks, and underwater swimming.
Description: The Advanced class refines swimming techniques with a focus on posture, balance, and propulsion. Students work on alternating between front and back swimming with coordinated arm movements, as well as developing side kicking—a foundation for freestyle breathing. Underwater challenges help strengthen breath and buoyancy control. Graduates are well-prepared to transition into learning freestyle and backstroke in subsequent stages.

Stroke

Prerequisites: Streamlined body positioning while kicking on the stomach and back, plus proficiency in underwater challenges.
Description: This class introduces students to competitive swimming strokes by combining previously learned skills into freestyle and backstroke techniques. Students develop whip kicks and dolphin kicks as the propulsive foundations for breaststroke and butterfly, while also working on the timing and movement patterns needed to perform the full strokes. Alongside stroke development, students continue improving underwater control and essential safety skills like treading water.

Gold

Prerequisites: Legal freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke techniques.
Description: The Gold Award represents the pinnacle of achievement at Sutton Swim School. Students refine all four competitive strokes—freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly—to meet rigorous competition standards in long-lane settings. This stage in a swimmer's journey emphasizes the development of advanced techniques, endurance, and precision. Graduates earn a personalized Gold Certificate recognizing their mastery of competitive swimming skills and readiness for swim teams or advanced aquatic sports.
